In this article we shall discuss how fossils can be used for the purposes of absolute dating.
Radiometric dating relies on the fact that some elements in the Earth’s atmosphere and rocks exist at different isotopes, some of these isotopes are unstable and upon breaking down emit radiation to become a stable form.
The radioactive isotopes decay at a constant and known rate to a more stable atom through identification of what atoms exist in the sample and what isotope they originated from are can be used to determine the fossils approximate age.
It is important to note although absolute dating gives an indication as to the time frame of a particular artifact and cannot give exact dates.
In VCE Biology there a two absolute dating techniques that are of a concern these are radiometric dating and electron spin resonance.
But lurking below that attractive surface is a generally bad person.
